Porras has been critical of politics in Venezuela. In the last elections, he called for verification of what the people have voted for. He himself was seen exercising that right.
As for how he wants to be remembered, the cardinal is clear: as a servant of his people in the most difficult moments.
CARD. BALTAZAR PORRAS
Archbishop Emeritus of Caracas
I want to be remembered, simply, as someone who served his people and who did not take advantage of them. I am very grateful to my father who, the day I was made bishop, came and gave me a hug, congratulated me, and told me: 'Son, remember where you come from, don't get too excited; remember that you are here to serve others and not to be served'.
Although he has remained in Venezuela, he has also held positions in the Roman Curia, being a member of several dicasteries. Although he is now retired, the pope will continue to entrust him with some missions. For example, Pope Francis has appointed him his special envoy to the sixth American Missionary Congress in Puerto Rico.
