The pope's first week in the hospital passed without any particular difficulties. The problems came the day after the press conference given by the doctors after Francis had been in the hospital for a week.

The pope suffered a severe respiratory crisis and, in addition, tests revealed that he would need a blood transfusion. The following day, in addition, they also detected the onset of a mild kidney infection.

Rome began to pray. Both at the Gemelli… and in the square.

Each day a cardinal led the rosary, which was attended by hundreds of faithful punctually at nine o'clock in the evening.

The kidney infection disappeared within a few days and the pontiff's health showed signs of improvement. The climate became more optimistic. However, another unforeseen event complicated things. It was two weeks after his admission to the hospital, on February 28, that the pope suffered a bronchospasm, a contraction of the bronchial muscles that prevented him from breathing. This also caused him to vomit, which he inhaled. Although they managed to solve the problem, the clinical picture became complicated again.
