Pope Leo received the President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, at the Vatican.

The leaders spoke for about 20 minutes and took part in the traditional exchange of gifts: the Colombian President presented a dove, a painting of the Virgin of Chiquinquirá, and two handcrafts: a Muisca raft and a werrengue basket.

According to the Vatican, they expressed satisfaction with the good relations between Colombia and the Holy See, as the Church and the State work together in favor of peace, reconciliation, and national unity.

Petro, who was accompanied by his granddaughters, later held a meeting with Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin.

During this second meeting, they discussed the sociopolitical situation in Colombia and the region, paying special attention to the consequences of conflicts, organized crime, and climate change.
