Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar, who has been in office for several months, was received by Pope Leo XIV at the Apostolic Palace.
According to the Vatican, the two expressed satisfaction with their good bilateral relations and with the Church’s contribution to the country’s life. They also discussed issues of common interest, including education, international developments, and the conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East. Both reaffirmed their commitment to promoting peace.
Magyar was accompanied by his family and members of his government.
He presented the pope with the first American edition of Cardinal József Mindszenty’s memoirs and a handwritten calligraphic transcript of Pope Pius XII’s radio address on November 10, 1956. The prime minister said the two gifts carry a message of freedom, dignity and peace.
Pope Leo, in turn, gave him a replica of a sculpture found in St. Peter’s Basilica, which symbolizes divine providence in everyday life, along with a book on the Apostolic Palaces.
