This man of faith and conviction was able to transform old divisions into bridges of hope for all of Europe, and he became a true ambassador of unity in diversity. Following his example, our shared responsibility as men and women of religious life is to bear witness to the fact that, across borders, it is always possible to come together, forge friendships, and build peace.
But the meeting has a particular importance because Metz is in a French region where a different religious system still exists. Catholic, Lutheran, Reformed and Jewish communities continue to have specific recognition from the state.
