Pope Leo XIV made his way along Montevideo’s famous waterfront, known as the Rambla, first by car and then in the popemobile. The traditional route offers visitors sweeping views of the Río de la Plata.
Crowds lined the streets to welcome him, waving flags and holding signs. Residents gathered along the route to catch a glimpse of the pope, including in downtown Montevideo, where he headed for the official welcome ceremony.
The last pope to visit Uruguay was John Paul II, in 1988.
