Pope Leo XIV’s visit to Latin America is officially underway. He landed at 4:20 p.m. at Carrasco International Airport in Montevideo, Uruguay.
He was welcomed by President Yamandú Orsi and Church leaders, including Cardinal Daniel Sturla, Archbishop of Montevideo; Bishop Milton Tróccoli, president of the Uruguayan Episcopal Conference; and Apostolic Nuncio Gianfranco Gallone, among others.
Children presented him with flowers, while the military rendered honors. A private welcome ceremony followed at the military air base.
During the flight, Pope Leo XIV sent telegrams to the countries he flew over, as is customary. This time, they included Italy, France, Algeria, Mauritania, Senegal, and Brazil.
