The Franciscan Foundation works to help poor families develop themselves and their abilities, so that they can improve their lives.

'We work on literacy programs and early education. Or with projects for young people, so that they can get a job or overcome drug addiction and delinquency.

Since 1990, Franciscan friars and volunteers have visited Fuerte Apache, a poor neighborhood in Buenos Aires. They work with children and adults there. For example, they give micro-loans to families so that they can build houses or start small businesses. They also spend time with old people and keep them active.

'It's an area where we suffer from a lack of security. Many people miss educational opportunities. There are few opportunities for work, and the health system is very precarious and few people can use it.

The group has focused more on the neighborhood since 2014. They want to be a sign of hope for all families in the area.

'Our style is a Franciscan style that comes from Saint Francis of Assisi. We work with many lay youth and also friars from the Order of Friars Minor.

Just a few miles from Buenos Aires, the friars are helping people in a neighborhood filled with people at risk of social exclusion. And in a way they're continuing the work of a very important man. When Pope Francis was the archbishop of Buenos Aires, he focused on the same areas.
