Saint Monica is one of the saints most devoted to mothers.

They turn to her to entrust their children to her. Saint Monica lived through a difficult time alongside Saint Augustine.

She offered many tears, prayers, and sacrifices until her son decided to embrace the Catholic faith.

Every August 27th, the Church celebrates her memory, and her example has not gone unnoticed by recent popes.

Pope Francis, in an Angelus, praised the saint and made a plea.

POPE FRANCIS
Today we remember Saint Monica, mother of Saint Augustine: with her prayers and tears, she asked the Lord for her son's conversion; a strong woman, a good woman! Let us pray for the many mothers who suffer when their children are a little lost or on difficult paths in life.

In fact, on August 27, 2024, Pope Francis traveled to the Basilica of Saint Augustine in Rome, where Saint Monica's remains lie, to pray before them.

In Pope Leo's case, it could not be otherwise. In fact, the pectoral cross he wore in the Vatican gallery on the day of his election, days later, was revealed to contain several relics.

Among them, those of Saint Augustine and Saint Monica. A union between mother and son that encompasses not only the biological aspect, but also the spiritual, and in which Pope Leo participates, like a good Augustinian, carrying them on his chest.
