When talking about marriage, the Church has usually focused on saying that marriage is meant to last for life. But the document “One Flesh” looks at something different: exclusivity or why a relationship shouldn’t be opened to others.
It seeks to answer today's motions that promote polyamory or open relationships. In this context, the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith reaffirms its support for monogamy and offers a renewed perspective, saying it’s the best way to express and fully experience human love.
Teaching monogamy is not a moral restriction, but an introduction to the greatness of a love that transcends what is immediate.
The document doesn’t limit itself Christian authors or the Bible. It also draws on the ideas of philosophers such as Viktor Frankle and the existentialist Kierkegaard.
It then moves into relationship dynamics, reflecting on the unique kind of friendship that develops within a couple and the emotional challenges that can come with it.
