In Ukraine, Russian attacks on the country continue, leaving many cities in ruins and many civilians without access to their homes. The situation has only worsened with the low winter temperatures. Pope Leo XIV referred to the situation during his Sunday Angelus.
POPE LEO XIV
I continue to follow with sorrow what is happening; I am close to those who suffer and I pray for them. The prolongation of hostilities, with increasingly serious consequences for the civilian population, deepens the rift between peoples and moves us further away from a just and lasting peace. I urge everyone to intensify efforts to bring this war to an end.
In the square, there were many young people from Catholic Action, a lay movement within the Church. The Pope asked them to be agents of peace in all areas of their lives and never to resort to violence, in word or action.
POPE LEO XIV
Together with these young people, let us pray for peace: in Ukraine, in the Middle East, and in all regions where, unfortunately, people are fighting over interests that are not those of the peoples. Peace is built by respecting peoples.
That day also marked World Leprosy Day. Pope Leo XIV expressed his closeness to all those affected by this disease.
