-“A soul that crosses into the afterlife awaits its final and fair judgment alone.”

This is Michał Kondrat's latest film, “Purgatory.” The docudrama draws on the experiences of mystics like Fulla Horak, St. Faustina Kowalska and St. Padre Pio, as well as on the studies of theologians and scientists who investigate the state of human consciousness when the body dies.

OSCAR DELGADO
Associate Producer of “Purgatory”
“We try to keep it very close to what the (Catholic) Church teaches. Obviously there's controversies when we talk about mystical experiences and everything else. There's different interpretations of what purgatory can be like. Most of the mystics that talk about purgatory say the Lord will judge us on love. Did we love? Did we follow, obviously, the commandments? But also, did we love? Did we do the mission that God has given us to do?”

Delgado says the film is for anyone curious about what happens to the human soul after death, especially, he says, at a time when global crises like the Covid-19 pandemic have given us a heightened sense of our mortality.

OSCAR DELGADO
Associate Producer of “Purgatory”
“I would just really encourage people to think about two things. One is that this is not permanent. Our state in life is not permanent as we see it. And to think about the afterlife, to really prepare ourselves, especially now with what's going on in the world, to think about the afterlife. And this film, 'Purgatory,' will help that.”

“Purgatory” will be available in select theaters in the United States on Oct. 25 and Oct. 28, just in time for All Souls' Day and All Saints' Day in November. It's a glimpse into eternity, to give viewers something a little more long-term to worry about than life on earth.
