Lawyers for Cardinal Angelo Becciu and nine other defendants are asking that the Vatican's case against them be nullified due to procedural errors committed by the prosecutor.

The trial surrounds the embezzlement of funds from the Vatican Secretariat of State through real estate investments in London.

Cardinal Becciu's lawyers claim that the prosecution is not respecting their right to see the transcripts of depositions and other the restricted material.

One lawyer has also objected that the prosecution sought special permissions from the Pope to gather information by intercepting phone calls, among other means, something not provided for in Vatican law. The lawyer says the rules of the game cannot be changed to favor of one party.

This was the seventh session of the trial. The next hearing is set for February 28, and the president of the tribunal is expected to reach a decision on March 1.
