What is the dogma of the Assumption of Our Lady?

2015-08-15

The Feast of the Assumption of Our Lady is celebrated every August 15th. The Church remembers Mary's death and passage into eternal life.

Years back, Pope Benedict XVI explained that it's a feast about the future that invites Christians to believe in the power of the Resurrection.

"It is a mystery of hope and joy for all of us. In Mary, one can see the goal of all of those who have joined their lives to Jesus.”

Two years ago, Pope Francis celebrated the day at Castel Gandolfo. Last year, it took place during his papal visit to South Korea.

Mary's Assumption was proclaimed dogma in 1950 by Pope Pius XII. Dogma is a belief that is considered a truth of the faith, revealed by God in Scripture or contained in tradition. It can also be proposed by the Church as truly revealed by God.

Although this particular dogma is recent, the Feast of the Assumption has been celebrated for centuries. Festivities were held in honor of Our Lady under different names.
