Pope Francis: "God is moved by our sadness and disappointment, and says our name"

Under spectacular sunshine, Pope Francis rode the popemobile through St. Peter's Square before the start of the General Audience. During the drive, he greeted several pilgrim babies and also received many gifts.

Pope Francis continued his weekly catechetical cycle on hope, this time centered on Mary Magdalene, the first person to see the risen Jesus. She had approached the tomb very depressed because she thought that the corpse had been stolen. Then, Jesus appeared to her.

"How beautiful to think that the first appearance of the Risen One according to the Gospel happened in such a personal way! That there is someone who knows us, who sees our suffering and disappointment, who is moved by us and who calls us by our name."

The Pope said that this continues to happen and God continues to do so, especially in times of sadness and disappointment.

"Try to think also, in this moment, with the disappointments and defeats that each one carries in the heart, that there is a God close to us, who calls us by our name and says: 'Arise, stop crying, because I have come to set you free.'”

Pope Francis recalled that God does not stand idly when people are going through difficult times, and instead he has responded with his resurrection.

At the end of the General Audience, he greeted many people, including the Cardinal of Hong Kong, Joseph Zen, one of the main leaders in the dialogue between China and the Vatican.
