John Paul II landed in Jordan on May 20, making his way to Amman and the River Jordan. He was the first Pope to visit Palestinian leaders in home soil. ; The Pope also visited Israel, traveling to Jerusalem and Nazareth. Throughout his trip, his frailty stood out.
