On Sunday October 2, more than 200 jesuits will convene in Rome to choose a new Superior General, although that is not their only task.

FR. ORLANDO TORRES, SJ
Rector of Collegio Internazionale del Gesí¹
'The General Congregation has two fundamental tasks. The first is to choose a new Superior General, the second is to tackle important issues about the life and mission of the Society of Jesus within the Church and today's world.

The office of Superior General has life tenure, but the current General, Fr. Adolfo Nicolás, resigned because he is about to turn 80 years old, and he did not want his age to impair the Society of Jesus.

The meeting will span almost a month. The election will be held on October 10, once the jesuits have decided the best candidate to spearhead the congregation.

FR. FEDERICO LOMBARDI, SJ
Assistant ad Providentiam and General Counselor
'The Society of Jesus on which we are reflecting in this General Congregation is expanding, from a demographic standpoint, from the West to Africa and Asia.

FR. ANTONIO MORENO, SJ
Provincial Superior of the Philippines
'We have several commissions: the first, about the state of the Society of Jesus, another about the life and mission of the Jesuits; and another about internal government, how to improve our structure.

The technical name of this meeting is 'General Congregation. More than half of the participants have been chosen 16.000 jesuits in 62 countries. The new Superior General will be the thirty-first successor of Saint Ignatius. The first to know the result of the election will be Pope Francis, the first Jesuit pope in history.
