The Vatican is preparing an international meeting against nuclear weapons. Various Nobel Prize winners and even a Nagasaki survivor will attend.

Francisco is very engaged in the cause. In 2015, during his visit to the UN headquarters in New York, he asked for an end to nuclear armaments. It wasn't the only time he has done so.

POPE FRANCIS

“There is an urgent need to work for a world free of nuclear weapons, in full application of the non-proliferation Treaty, in letter and spirit, with a goal of a complete prohibition of these weapons.”

In March 2017, he sent another message to the UN and also sent this tweet during the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons in September.

The pope is worried by the increased tension between the United States and North Korea. The two nations have rekindled the specter of nuclear war. On his return from Egypt, Pope Francis didn't mask his concern.

“Let's stop. Let's find a diplomatic resolution. Regarding this issue, I think the United Nations has a duty to retake its leadership, because it has been diluted, it has been diluted a bit.”

War is one of the issues that the pope has denounced with greater intensity in the past few days, especially during his visit to the Sicily-Rome American Cemetery.

POPE FRANCIS

“Men do everything to declare and make war. At the end, they destroy themselves.”

Almost 8,000 North American soldiers who lost their lives during World War II are buried in this cemetery. There, Pope Francis let out this bitter lamentation. He said today's world is already at war and that it is entering an even more destructive period.
