In his homily during daily Mass at Casa Santa Marta, Pope Francis warned about the culture of indifference toward poverty. He said 'there is a habit of seeing the poor as decorations of a city,' as if poverty was something normal.

POPE FRANCIS
The vast majority are the poor victims of economic policies, of financial policies. Some recent statistics summarize it this way: there is a lot of money in the hands of a few, and a lot of poverty in many, in so many.

He made reference to Jesus' words, 'Because the poor are always with you.' He invited each person to ask him or herself: 'Do I see them? Am I aware of this reality - especially the hidden reality, those who are ashamed to say that they cannot make ends meet?”
