Italy's Banco Alimentare works with around 7,500 charitable establishments to help feed the country's most disadvantaged population.

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, this food bank's volunteers continue to work to help those most in need who, even under normal circumstances, don't have the resources to put food on the table.

GIOVANNI BRUNO
President, Fondazione Banco Alimentare (Italy)
“The Banco Alimentare has sought to continue its work, as best as possible, during this emergency. It was very difficult at first, for a number of reasons. We had less volunteers because people over 65 years of age were obligated to stay home.”

That's why young people throughout Italy have stepped up to fill in for volunteers who may be more susceptible to the virus.

“They went to carry out the usual activities: packaging, delivering, helping out at food distribution centers.”

“Despite the coronavirus and the rain, we are continuing our distribution.”

“People have clearly perceived that no one saves himself alone, in a situation like this one. Thus, solidarity is an inevitable and ineradicable condition, and this has been a powerful driving force.”

The president recalls Pope Francis' words from the evening of the extraordinary Urbi et orbi blessing, when he said everyone is in the same boat. Giovanni Bruno says the pope accurately interpreted this growing sentiment of a shared struggle. It's a sentiment that continues to bring people together in unexpected ways.
