Venezuela, already submerged in crisis, is now hit by the coronavirus. There are over 360 registered cases and about 10 dead.

There, Caritas is taking a new approach to guarantee the population is not abandoned. One example is its continued work delivering meals to those most in need. The project is called “Olla comunitaria,” meaning “community pot.” In 2019, they launched 865 initiatives like this one, distributing around 87,291 servings of food.

JANETH MÁRQUEZ
Director, Caritas Venezuela
“We can't turn food distributions into community gatherings. So people at home cook the meals, and the young people go from house to house to deliver them. We also distribute hygiene kits with masks, alcohol and gloves. We have all the health-related necessities. People call us, asking for medication or psychological consultations.”

The organization's more than 20,000 volunteers continue helping those deprived of their freedom, while simultaneously promoting human rights.

Additionally, in light of the migratory wave set in motion by the crisis, Caritas has designated six offices to tend to the needs of refugees located in different regions of Venezuela.

The UNHCR reports Venezuelans as one of the world's largest displaced populations. Last year, over four million citizens abandoned the country. In front of this reality, Caritas' motto stands firm. Help us help!
