After the Sunday Angelus, Pope Francis expressed his sympathy for Canadians traumatized by the recent discovery of the remains of 215 children at Canada's largest indigenous boarding school.

POPE FRANCIS
“This sad discovery further heightens awareness of the pain and sufferings of the past.”

Boarding schools for native Canadians took indigenous children from their homes to assimilate them into Canadian society. They were often run by both Catholics and the Canadian government, and are accused of abusing children and erasing indigenous culture.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau visited the Pope in 2017, and asked him to apologize for the Church's role in abusing native Canadians.

The Vatican left the decision to formally apologize to the Canadian bishops, such as the Archbishop of Vancouver who offered an apology. Approximately 16 of the 70 Catholic dioceses in Canada were associated with indigenous boarding schools.

In 2009, Pope Benedict XVI apologized to a group of native Canadians for “the deplorable conduct of some members of the Church.'

Yet Trudeau is once again calling for an explicit apology on behalf of the Church in light of the recent discovery.

The Pope also praised the recent beatification of Sr. Maria Laura Mainetti, an Italian religious sister who was killed by members of a Satanic cult and declared a martyr.

POPE FRANCIS
“She who loved young people more than anything, and who loved and forgave those same girls imprisoned by evil, leaves us her program for life: do every little thing with faith, love and enthusiasm.”

He also prayed for the over 160 people killed in an attack on a village in northern Burkina Faso. The country has been experiencing repeated attacks from Islamic extremist groups.
