Pope Francis sent an initial contribution of 200,000 euros (about $235,000) to help those affected by the earthquake in Haiti, which claimed at least 2,200 lives and injured more than 12,000 people.

The donation, made through the Vatican's Dicastery for the Service of Integral Human Development, is yet another gesture of support and closeness made on behalf of the Catholic Church. The Pope had also expressed his concern for earthquake victims during the Sunday Angelus.

POPE FRANCIS
August 15, 2021
“I want to express my closeness to the dear people hard hit by the earthquake. While I lift up my prayer to the Lord for the victims, I extend my word of encouragement to the survivors, hoping that the interest of the international community to help might move toward them.”

Pope Francis also sent initial emergency aid of around $69,000 to help those recently hit by a cyclone in Bangladesh; as well as 100,000 euros ($117,000) to Vietnam, where the economic crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic has left many people in serious need of aid.
