Pontifical Academy for Life responds to criticism over latest appointments

The Pontifical Academy for Life has responded to criticisms it has received for admitting members such as Mariana Mazzucato among its ranks. 

She is a prestigious Italian-American economist and professor at University College London who has also advised several governments and international organizations throughout the world. In several publications, Mazzacuto has been characterized as a leader in shaping the future of capitalism. 

She proposes a more socially-focused model of capitalism, and her ideas have been personally commended by the Pope. Mazzucato has also praised Pope Francis' comments criticizing the structure of the global economy. In 2015, his speech at the United Nations drew such heavy applause that he had to take a pause.

However, Mazzacuto says she is an atheist and pro-choice, statements that have made some see controversial her appointment to the Pontifical Academy for Life.

The Academy has since responded by saying that the documents it publishes always pass through the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith. 

They maintain that it is important to create ties with experts in different fields, Catholic or not, to promote dialogue and a free exchange of ideas.
