To mark this Christmas, Pope Francis will send letters to different heads of state. He is inviting world leaders to extend a gesture of mercy to those “brothers and sisters deprived of their freedom.

The Pope is asking the state heads to offer this gesture to people they think need it and who would benefit from it. He has often remembered prisoners in his prayers.

POPE FRANCIS
In a special way, I would like to pray for those who are in prison, for our brothers and sisters locked up in jail. They are suffering, and we must be near to them in prayer, so that the Lord might help them and console them in this difficult time.

As part of the Christmas season, Pope Francis encourages this “time marked by tensions, injustices, and conflicts” to be open to the “grace that comes from the Lord.”
