The Holy See Press Office released the first images of Pope emeritus Benedict XVI lying in state at the Mater Ecclesiae monastery on the Vatican grounds.
Traditionally, following the death of a Pope, the body is kept in a room at the Vatican for members of the Roman Curia to pay their respects.
The body of the late Pope emeritus will be moved to St. Peter's Basilica tomorrow morning to allow pilgrims to say their final farewell before the funeral Mass on January 5 in St. Peter's Square.
