Pope Francis discusses promoting peace with the President of Ecuador

The meeting between Pope Francis and Ecuadorian President, Guillermo Lasso, was longer than usual. It lasted 50 minutes and the tone of the meeting was warm and cordial.

Among other gifts, the President gave Pope Francis this image of the Virgin of Guadalupe.

According to the Vatican, the two spoke about promoting peace in the country. Ecuador is a country that has been hard hit by drug trafficking.

In 2024, the International Eucharistic Congress will be held in Ecuador. It is not yet confirmed if the Pope will travel there to close the event as he did in Hungary in 2021.

Pope Francis visited Ecuador in 2015 during his trip to Latin America.
