On Good Friday, Pope Francis began the celebration of the Passion of the Lord. He was unable to kneel before the cross due to his knee problems, but remained seated before it in his wheelchair. Then, he prayed in Latin.

Cardinal Raniero Cantalamessa, Preacher of the Papal Household, delivered the homily for the Liturgy of the Word. It is a Vatican tradition since 1981. In his homily, he refuted the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, who denied the death of Christ over a century ago.

I am reminded of an image that I have sometimes seen in person and that I hope came true for the author of that statement. A baby, angry, tries to hit his father's face with his fists. Until, having exhausted his strength, he gives in crying in the arms of his father, who consoles him and holds him close to his chest.

The liturgy continued with the Adoration of the Cross. A deacon carried the uncovered cross to the altar. For the first time after the pandemic, those present at the celebration were able to kiss it. In previous years, only the Pope had done so.

After Communion was distributed, Pope Francis left St. Peter's Basilica to follow the Stations of the Cross from his residence at Casa Santa Marta. He was advised by doctors to stay inside due to the cold weather.
