Before a square filled with pilgrims, Pope Leo XIV shared a paternal greeting with the Chinese community, praying in particular for the victims of a recent mining accident.

Over 80 workers are dead and more than 100 were injured after there was a gas explosion in a mine in northern China, in the province of Shanxi.

POPE LEO XIV
May the intercession of the Queen of Heaven obtain for the believing community in China the grace of unity and grant everyone the strength to bear witness to the Gospel amid daily hardships, so as to be seeds of hope and peace. In particular, I invoke eternal peace for the victims of the accident that occurred in recent days in a mine in northern China.

That day also marked the Day of Prayer for the Church in China, together with the liturgical memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Help of Christians, who is especially venerated at the Catholic shrine in Shanghai.
