More than 30 Nobel laureates from around the world gathered in Rome to close the World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates on Artificial Intelligence and nuclear war.

The Giulio Cesare chamber, main gallery of Rome's City Hall on Capitoline Hill, hosted the signing of the “Rome Declaration,” a document endorsed by participants calling for an “unarmed and disarming peace in the age of AI.”

In 'Magnifica Humanitas,' Pope Leo identifies a path: the way of Nehemiah. We can only navigate this phenomenon together. The declaration is particularly important because it has been signed by Nobel Laureates, providing an example of this way in action.

It is a human way of navigating an era shaped by technology and nuclear power, placing both at the service of the common good.

The summit was held from July 14 to 16. The first two sessions took place at Borgo Laudato Sí, located within the Castel Gandolfo gardens, the Vatican's project on integral economy.

Artificial Intelligence and the development of nuclear weaponry are among the key challenges facing both the Church and the world today.

The Church's response lies in offering a vision for the future and in safeguarding human dignity, particularly amid diversity and vulnerability. It also means creating community spaces in an age of growing loneliness, intensified by technology. Seen in this light, it is a great opportunity for the Church.

The event was organized primarily by the Domus Communis Foundation, chaired by Cardinal Silvano Maria Tomasi, who also addresssed participants during the closing session.

The General Vicar of Rome, Baldassare Reina, stressed that no man-made machine ever can, or should, replace the human person.

General Vicar of the Diocese of Rome

No machine, algorithm or autonomous system should be placed at the center of decisions upon which humanity's survival depends. Choices involving life and death, peace and war, the future of nations and generations must remain fully in human hands, guided by responsibility and accountability.

Against a backdrop of growing geopolitical instability, the 'Rome Declaration' presents an alternative vision for the responsible use of AI. The event brought together more than 200 leading figures from the fields of peace and technology.
