Pope Leo XIV received the Trinitarians and the Conventual Franciscans, two religious orders approved by Pope Innocent III. The Pope spoke to them about their founders: Saint John of Matha and Saint Francis of Assisi.
POPE LEO XIV
God inspired these two saints, not only with a spiritual path of service, but also with the desire to dialogue with the Successor of Peter about the gift they had received from the Spirit, so that it might be placed at the service of the Church. Saint Francis explained to the Pope the need to follow Jesus without reservations, without ulterior motives, without ambiguity or artifice. Saint John of Matha expressed this truth with words that would later prove fundamental—and that Saint Francis would make his own.
The Pope also spoke to them about a dedication that becomes service. And part of that dedication, he explained, involves living with nothing of one’s own—nothing hidden in the pocket or in the heart.
