The high July temperatures didn’t stop St. Peter’s Square from looking like this. The Square was packed with pilgrims. That’s why, when Pope Leo stepped out onto the balcony of the Apostolic Palace, he thanked them for their effort.

POPE LEO XIV
I warmly greet all of you, faithful from Rome and pilgrims from Italy and various countries. In the intense heat of this season, your journey to cross the Holy Doors is all the more courageous and admirable.

Pope Leo XIV also delivered a message in English to those affected by the floods in Texas, United States. The floods left dozens dead or missing, many of whom were children.
POPE LEO XIV
I would like to express sincere condolences to all the families who have lost loved ones, in particular their daughters, who were at the summer camp, in the disaster caused by flooding of the Guadalupe river in Texas in the United States. We pray for them.

As is customary, the Pope also took the opportunity to call for dialogue that would silence weapons.

POPE LEO XIV
Peace is the desire of all peoples and the painful cry of those torn apart by war. Let us ask the Lord to touch hearts and inspire the minds of leaders, so that they may replace the violence of weapons with the pursuit of dialogue.

This was Pope Leo XIV’s final Angelus before beginning his vacation. On that Sunday, around 5:00 p.m., he arrived at Castel Gandolfo, where he will stay until July 20.
