Pope Francis: No people is criminal and no religion is terrorist

February 17, 2017. Pope Francis has sent an important message to the Meetings of Popular Movements that is taking place in Modesto (California). The pope denounces the "moral blindness of this indifference”: "under the guise of what is politically correct or ideologically fashionable, one looks at those who suffer without touching them. But they are televised live; they are talked about in euphemisms and with apparent tolerance, but nothing is done systematically to heal the social wounds or to confront the structures that leave so many brothers and sisters by the wayside”.

The Vatican pays tribute to Charlie Chaplin

2014-06-23

Charlie Chaplin conquered the entertainment world with a walking stick, an unmistakable mustache and a list of moving stories. His movies didn't need words nor color to leave their mark on modern cinema.

Now the Vatican is celebrating 125 years since his birth with a collection of stamps dedicated to  his most famous character, Charlot.

MAURO OLIVIERI
Director, Vatican Philatelic and Numismatic Office
"We thought it was a good moment to recognize the importance of this artist, of celebrating him as a genius who expressed his art using new media. Cinema changed a lot after him, but he is one of the first and best actors and directors.”

All his movies, like 'Modern Times' and 'The Great Dictator,' are full of unique moments.

Of all of them, one was chosen in particular to appear on the stamp, one of the most touching moments of his career.

MAURO OLIVIERI
Director, Vatican Philatelic and Numismatic Office
"It's a moment in his film 'City Lights.' Right when the girl sees him and understands that it was him who helped her throughout the film with such humanity.”

For Olivieri, the importance of Chaplin goes beyond his personal views on religion. Thanks to the stamps released by the Vatican Philatelic and Numismatic Office, Charlot is now part of the Vatican collection.
