The Community of Sant'Egidio has signed an agreement with the Italian Ministry of the Interior to host 300 refugees from Greece, specifically from the island of Lesbos.

According to data from the organization, there are currently some 15,000 refugees on Lesbos, many of whom have been trapped on the island for years, living in dramatic conditions in the legal and illegal camps of Moria. To this is added the fire that occurred in recent days, to which thousands of people lost everything.

MARCO IMPAGLIAZZO
President of the Community of Sant’Egidio
“All Italians have seen the tragic situation in which thousands of people find themselves, in which so many unaccompanied minors are found in the camps of Greece. So now, Italy with this protocol once again shows its face as a country that welcomes legal migration.”

This agreement will promote the legal arrival of applicants for international protection, with special attention to the most vulnerable for whom a program of inclusion and social, cultural and linguistic stabilization is necessary.

The project will last 18 months and will prioritize the transfer of families and some unaccompanied minors.

MARCO IMPAGLIAZZO
President of the Community of Sant’Egidio
“The humanitarian corridor guarantees, with financial aid from the host association, host Italian citizens, and not the State, the reception and integration of people who are in truly dramatic situations and who are forced to flee from serious crises.”

The Community of Sant'Egidio remains very close to this drama. In August, it opened the first “solidarity restaurant” for refugees from Lesbos. There, they also offer English courses and activities for children at the School of Peace.
