With a bouquet of white roses, Pope Francis’ favorites, Pope Leo XIV went to his tomb and prayed before it in the Basilica of St. Mary Major.

These images you are seeing took place just hours after the pontiff celebrated Mass in memory of his predecessor and of the cardinals and bishops who passed away over the course of this year.

In addition, this visit also left us with an image of the Holy Father that was often seen with Pope Francis.

He prayed before the icon of the Salus Populi Romani in the Pauline Chapel, the Byzantine-style Marian image for which the people of Rome have great devotion.

After carrying out this visit, Pope Leo XIV went to Castel Gandolfo, something that has already become a regular practice for the pontiff in recent weeks.

This is not the first time Pope Leo has visited the Basilica of St. Mary Major. He had already done so on May 10, two days after his election as pope, and again on June 22, after the Corpus Christi procession, the solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ.
