Like many other Syrians, Safouh- Al-Mosleh fell victim to a war that has already claimed the lives of more than 200,000 people. He was a volunteer for Catholic Charity 'Caritas' in the city of Aleppo. But on April 7th, he died after being struck by a bomb.

'Caritas helps everyone. From the young to the elderly. In Aleppo many of the shops are closed and the schools are shut down. Safouh was a professor of French literature, but he wasn't working since most schools are not open right now. He also had a traveling agency, but obviously that wasn't really going well. So he truly did dedicate this life to helping others.â?

The civil war has been raging in Syria for the past five years. The international community has not been able to stop it. Over 215,000 people have died. More than 4 million have been displaced and 11 million are in dire need of help. Caritas has been there to help Syrians who just want things to go back to normal. Some, like this volunteer, have paid with their lives.

MICHEL ROY
Secretary General, Caritas Internationalis
'The future of Syria depends on what the international community is willing to do. As of now, it's not doing anything to stop the sale of weapons. It's horrible. Deaths like that of our volunteer challenges us to continue to reach out and find a political solution.â?

Dialogue and compromise will be key to stop the war. Caritas says the international community also needs to rise to the occasion and take action, both with monetary support and humanitarian assistance- especially as Syria experiences one of the worst humanitarian disasters in recent decades.
