One of the most original initiatives Pope Francis has spearheaded is World day of the Poor. It is celebrated every November. But the Pope wants preparations to start well ahead of time.

That’s why the Vatican presented a special message Pope Francis prepared for this day.

In it the Pope calls for a change in the way we view poverty. He says “the poor aren’t external to the community. They are brothers and sisters with whom to share suffering, to alleviate their situation.”

ABP. RINO FISICHELLA
President, Pontifical Council for the New Evangelization
“We have to experience poverty in order to have a deeper understanding of it. That’s why talking to the poor without understanding poverty is senseless.”

The Pope asks governments and institutions for creative planning to address the issue of poverty, especially during the reconstruction following the pandemic.

CRISTIANE MURRAY
Vatican Spokesperson
“A powerful concept that resonates in this year’s message is that poverty is not the result of fate, but rather, a consequence of society’s selfishness.”

ABP. RINO FISICHELLA
President, Pontifical Council for the New Evangelization
“The Pope asks each one of us to take responsibility, without delegating to others. +FLASH Poverty is the fruit of great objective responsibilities, which is why we must analyze them, and, when possible, overcome them.”

World Day of the Poor will be celebrated on Nov. 14. That day, the Pope will celebrate Mass with the poor. Then, if the pandemic allows it, he will have lunch with them.
